Trump news today: Trump rants about nuclear war and dismisses climate crisis while claiming he’s ‘very legitimate’

Donald Trump joins TikTok days after hush money conviction

Donald Trump downplayed the threat of climate change in his latest interview with Fox News, insisting that international unrest is of greater concern and declaring: “The only global warming that matters to me is nuclear global warming.”

The Republican presidential candidate and convicted felon otherwise used the sitdown with Sean Hannity to maintain that, while he himself remained a “very legitimate” candidate for the White House, the US had become a “banana republic”, also boasting about his role in overturning Roe v Wade and attacking Joe Biden and Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer.

Meanwhile, the judge presiding over Trump’s classified documents case in Florida will allow several parties not involved in the case to argue in favour of the former president’s attempt to dismiss the charges brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith.

US district judge Aileen Cannon, who has already come under fire over a series of favourable rulings towards the man who appointed her to the bench in 2020, will now allow two right-wing activist attorneys to speak in court.

Also on Wednesday, an appeals court halted any further movement in the election interference case against Trump in Georgia.

Video of Black Panthers founder claiming to support Trump is ‘a lie’, says grandson

A reporter has been accused of exploiting an elderly man with cognitive issues after publishing a video about a founding member of the Black Panther Party supposedly endorsing Trump for president.

The video was uploaded to TikTok by Carol Mitchell, according to the New York Post, and showed 81-year-old Black Panther founder David Hilliard endorsing the Republican.

Mitchell reportedly removed the video after Hilliard’s grandson Eric Jones threatened to obtain a cease-and-desist order. He said on social media that his grandfather is not a Trump supporter and was manipulated in the video due to his ongoing “cognitive issues.”

Journalists attack ‘truly appalling’ Trump over Evan Gershkovich promise

Trump issued a deeply cynical campaign video on Tuesday in which he promised he could get Vladimir Putin to release The Wall Street Journal reporter from the Moscow jail where he has spent the past year on spurious espionage charges just in time for his own inauguration next January.

Among those rebuking Trump for his gross attempt to capitalise on the journalist’s plight was the redoubtable Hayes:

Also incensed was Washington Post associate editor Eugene Robinson, who told MSNBC’s Jonathan Lemire that Trump’s opportunism was “obscene and disgusting”.

Here’s our report on the Pulitzer Prize-winner’s words.

Trump hails ‘immortal heroes’ on D-Day anniversary

It’s always hard to be entirely convinced by Trump’s boilerplate statements on these occasions, given his own serial draft dodging and infamous slur against the “suckers and losers” of the Armed Forces, but here it is anyway for the record:

“Today, we honor the immortal heroes who landed at Normandy 80 years ago. The men of D-Day will live forever in history as among the bravest, noblest, and greatest Americans ever to walk the earth. They shed their blood, and thousands gave their lives, in defense of American Freedom. They are in our hearts today and for all time.”

Here’s Andrew Feinberg on what Biden had to say in Normandy.

Democrats rip Kevin McCarthy’s about-face on Biden’s mental fitness

A top Republican who once praised President Joe Biden’s mental acuity during high-stakes negotiations has changed his tune as the GOP hopes to revive questions over whether the 81-year-old is fit to serve another four years as America’s chief executive.

Though 77-year-old convicted felon and former president Donald Trump has had his share of gaffes and exhibits evidence that he, too, is nearly a decade older than he was when he first ran for president during the 2016 election, Biden’s mental agility comes under fire in a Wall Street Journal story based on interviews with Republicans and a small number of Democrats who’ve met with him in recent months.

“Most of those who said Biden performed poorly were Republicans, but some Democrats said that he showed his age in several of the exchanges,” the WSJ story says.

The article quotes just one Republican who was willing to attack Biden — the oldest person ever to serve as president of the United States — on the record: former House speaker Kevin McCarthy, who resigned from Congress last year but is reported to be seeking a top role in a potential second Trump administration.

Andrew Feinberg and Eric Garcia have this on the Democratic response to McCarthy.

Trump suffers primary blow as MAGA candidate defeated in New Jersey

Trump-endorsed MAGA candidate Christine Serrano Glassner is set to lose the GOP nomination for the New Jersey Senate race, according a projection from the Associated Press, in another setback to the former president.

Real estate developer Curtis Bashaw is predicted to secure the nomination instead, meaning he will compete for the seat that has been held until now by Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who is embroiled in a federal corruption case in which he is facing charges of bribery and other offenses.

The incumbent chose not to run for the Democratic nomination following the indictment against him and widespread calls within his party to resign, but he officially launched an independent bid for the seat on Monday.

Recap: Trump claims nuclear war is a greater threat to the world than climate crisis

Here’s a closer look at Trump’s vision of man-made apocalypse in conversation with Sean Hannity last night.

His comments came immediately after it was revealed that the world had just seen its hottest May on record, completing 12 months in a row that have set new global temperature records for the time of year, but also right after Russian president Vladimir Putin threatened to supply long-range missiles to enemies of the West in retaliation for American and European support for Ukraine.

Trump lawyers ask New York judge to lift hush money trial gag order

The former president’s attorneys are asking the New York judge who presided over his hush money trial to lift a gag order imposed on him that prevents him from commenting about witnesses, jurors and others tied to the criminal case.

In a letter made public this week, Trump’s defense attorney Todd Blanche asked Justice Juan Merchan to end the gag order “now that the trial has concluded” after a jury convicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records on May 30.

“The concerns articulated by the government and the Court do not justify continued restrictions on the First Amendment rights of President Trump – who remains the leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election – and the American people,” Blanche wrote.
