Regardless of your stance on US politics, one may argue that it’s a cruel joke: Though it turned out to be an April Fools’ joke fundraising attempt, Donald Trump purported to announce on Monday that he was suspending his reelection campaign in a tweet to supporters.

In an attempt to unseat Democratic opponent Joe Biden in November’s election, the outgoing Republican president abruptly issued an email and text message to supporters saying, “I’m suspending my campaign,” along with a link.

However, clicking on it directed them to a page asking them to support his campaign financially.z

“Did you really think I’d suspend my campaign? Happy April Fools Day!” he wrote in capital letters.

For many years, US politicians have courted small donors by bombarding followers with calls, emails, and texts (often more than a dozen per day) pleading with them to make a financial contribution to the cause.

By doing this, they can make millions of dollars, which is a significant amount of money in a nation where running for president can cost billions of dollars.

To differentiate themselves from the masses, candidates must become more inventive due to the deluge of requests.

In the hunt for funds, the Biden campaign currently has the upper hand, which it is relishing.
